Corona – The Beginning

Corona – The Beginning. The portraits were taken in April 2020.

At the beginning of the Corona pandemic it felt very strange for me to have to wear a mask during the whole working day. It was bizarre and unusual not being able to look people in the face properly.

I wanted to capture this feeling of uneasiness photographically and so I had the idea to photograph colleagues and friends with their different masks on wet plate. Through this procedure, the portrayed people are shown unaltered, the viewer is forced to submit to the intense gaze. It creates an uneasiness that many are affected by in these times.

Three portraits of this series were shown at the exhibition “fragile” of the BFF in Cologne.
